COVID-19 - Coronavirus

Coronavirus is a genus of viruses that infects humans and animals. Coronaviruses cause respiratory illnesses in humans such as the common cold, mild fever and sore throat, and severe acute respiratory syndrome. They can also infect many animals, producing symptoms from mild respiratory or gastrointestinal illness to acute pneumonia or diarrhea.

The Coronavirus is a virus of the family Coronaviridae, order Nidovirales. It has been described as the “common cold of humans” and its importance lies in its ability to cause infections other than the common cold, such as Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS).

Coronavirus was first isolated in the early 1980s in patients with pneumonia. In the following year, cases of severe respiratory illness were described among young adult men living in metropolitan Saudi Arabia, and reports came from the United Kingdom, Germany, France, and Jordan. In subsequent years a large number of additional cases of respiratory illness were reported worldwide. Cases are now reported annually in most countries in all continents, and pandemic spread has occurred. Coronavirus is now recognized as one of the major viral causes of pneumonia throughout the world.
